Olympus OM-D E-M5: The First Micro Four Thirds Camera Aimed at Replacing a DSLR

The promise of mirrorless cameras has always been DSLR-level performance, miniaturized. That hasn’t panned out. The E-M5 might fall short of the threshold too, but it’s a statement of intent: The future of Olympus is mirrorless, and the graybeard Japanese camera co wants you to ditch your DSLR and get on board. The future-pushing features of the E-M5 should hammer this point home; these are specs you’re used to seeing in pro-level rigs.

Beyond future implications, the camera itself is a hell of a thing. The guts consist of the 16.1MP sensor designed to deliver image quality without sucking your battery dry (LiveMOS), and the latest generation of Olympus’ TruePic VI image processor. There’s a very cool tilting 3-inch OLED touchscreen that slides out to give you a live view of your subject; and you can focus and control the shutter just by pressing on the screen. The shutter’s quiet, noticeably more so than near-competitors like Sony’s NEX line, even while machine-gunning continuous shots at 9fps. Low light capability looks pretty good too: ISO runs from 200 to 25,600, and has a new technology called Intelligent High Sensitivity (IHS) that Olympus claims will let you shoot clean(ish) at 12,800 ISO.

KOTA KINABALU: Police on Monday raided an illegal cyber gambling centre at Kepayan Perdana, near to Cyber City, which was installed with closed-circuit camera (CCTV) at its main entrance to detect the presence of enforcement authorities.

The raid was carried out by a police team from the D7 unit of Commercial Crime Investigation Department (Gambling/Vice/Secret Societies) of the Sabah police headquarters in Kepayan.

Police led by deputy superintendent Sabarudin Rahmat, stormed into the premises, located on the second floor of Kepayan Perdana, at 10.20pm and detained six people, including a woman, and confiscated 29 computer sets, six slot machines and RM445 in cash.

According to Sabarudin, the raid was carried out after a tip-off and continuous surveillance.

CELLULOID 35mm has been the format of choice for the film industry, but 2012 will signify an end to the era and the beginning of something new.

This month, there will be more digital-cinema screens in the world than 35mm ones for the first time since the technology conversion began in 1999, with the last celluloid cinemas expected to shut up shop in 2015. Digital technology has already taken over much of the home entertainment market. It seems strange, then, that the vast majority of theatrical motion pictures are shot and distributed on celluloid film, just like they were more than a century ago. 

In a couple of week’s time the Directors Guild Cyprus is organising a seminar about the potential of new technology in cinema. The seminar will take place at the ARTos Foundation in Nicosia on February 10-12 under the direction of Greek Director of Photography Giorgos Frentzos, in collaboration with Cypriot filmmakers.

Sentence for supermarket killing tops police blotter

The second defendant in a fatal shooting in the parking lot of a Yakima supermarket was sentenced to 6 1/2 years in prison for manslaughter. Ezra Williams Swann, 25, of Tukwila originally faced multiple charges of first-degree murder and assault in connection with the Feb. 27, 2010, slaying of James Kilby. Swann pleaded guilty last week to first-degree manslaughter. In exchange for his plea, prosecutors agreed to recommend the low end of the sentencing range of 78-102 months in prison. Earlier this month, fellow defendant Jordan Dior Daisy, 23, of Seattle was sentenced to 16 years in prison for his guilty plea to a charge of second-degree murder. Kilby, 27, of Union Gap was fatally shot while sitting in a parked car outside Wray’s supermarket in Yakima. Daisy’s plea came mid-trial, during which testimony suggested Kilby was shot after a friend tried to rip off Daisy and Swann during a drug deal.

The stock gained 1.5 percent to 4,700 yen.

It’s a sweet little design but I was never really a fan of hotshoe top handles. Seems to me that eventually something (like the weight of a pricey lens) could cause the hotshoe to break or bend, and I’d want a backup plan for when that happens.
